Dissections of Mammalian Shanks and Feet

Instructor's Note:

I did a demonstration dissection of the shank and foot of a squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) for this lab. Squirrels have interesting ankles, at which they can "reverse" their feet so that the toes point backwards as they are descending trees headfirst. Before I started the dissection, I was sure I knew how this reversal worked -- but what I like about teaching this class is that I always learn something new.
